Psalm 116:3-6 NIV 2011
The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
Then I called on the name of the Lord, “Lord, save me!”
The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.
The Lord protects the unwary; when I was brought low, he saved me.
The unidentified author of this Psalm, possibly a king, praised God for delivering him from death. His words are much like David’s in the Psalms and elsewhere. 2 Samuel 22:5, “The waves of death swirled around me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.” He felt bound as a prisoner of a grave. He prays to the Lord and is saved. 2 Chronicles 12:6, “The leaders of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, ‘The Lord is just.’” Psalm 86:15, “But you Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God…” God encourages believers in times of distress and sorrow.
My senior year locker partner was at the reunion on Saturday night. We’ve remained in touch via email since our last reunion. I was so thankful to see her as I’d been praying for her during times of distress over health concerns. As a believer she was encouraged over and over again by our compassionate and gracious God. In fact each time she came by I just needed to hug her again. God encourages me daily in all life’s events.
Why does God encourage His faithful?
Encouraged every day,
