Amos 4:13 NIV 2011
He who forms the mountains, who creates the wind, and who reveals his thoughts to mankind, who turns dawn into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth—the Lord God Almighty is his name.
God’s prophet Amos went to the northern kingdom of Israel. They had a sin problem that God would judge. Scholars place his ministry around Bethel, where the rich and famous worshiped. Amos 7:13, “Don’t prophesy anymore at Bethel, because this is the king’s sanctuary and the temple if the kingdom.” God governs the order of the universe. No one can hide his or her sin from God. The same God, whose presence permeates His creation, has the power to execute judgment upon Israel. Moses warned but Pharaoh suffered judgment. Amos 9:10a, “All the sinners among my people will die by the sword…” Judgment is a consequence of sin; seek the Lord and live.
Though the Lord loves His people, sin is still a problem that can only be covered by Christ’s shed blood. Thankfully, we live on the other side of the cross. All have the opportunity to chose and follow Christ. Romans 3:10, 23 “There is no one righteous, not even one…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Daily I’m reminded I fall short because I’m imperfect. Jesus’ blood covers me. I escaped God’s judgment by seeking the Lord who gave me eternal life.
How will we draw closer to Him?
