Hebrews 13:11-12 NIV 2011
The high priest carries the blood of the animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy, through his own blood.
The book of Hebrews was written to the Jewish Christians who knew The Law. The author’s objective; confirm Christ’s conclusive sovereignty and sufficiency as mediator of God’s Great Grace. Leviticus 16:15, “He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it.” Jesus’ crucifixion was outside the city. John 19:17, “Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull.” The Savior’s sacrifice covers sins of believers.
This was the second Scripture I found on that piece of paper yesterday. I remember standing outside the walls of Jerusalem and thinking about our Savior carrying the cross while purposefully walking to Calvary. Margaret and I spoke of his death outside the walls of the city being part of God’s plan. We stood where some archeologist chronicled the spot of His crucifixion. To think that He carried that tremendous weight on His shoulders for our sins humbled us both. Thank you Jesus for covering my sins daily.
Where is Jesus calling us to walk?
Savoring the Savior,
