Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16 NIV 2011

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

“Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

Moses was given a covenant from God at Horeb, Mt. Sinai. The Lord again confirmed this covenant as they neared the Promised Land. The covenant, also known as The Law, would bring blessings to the Israelites as they obediently followed God’s Words. To honor both father and mother the people were to treat them with high regard and respect. Leviticus 19:3a, “Each of you must respect your mother and father.” They were to be obedient. Ephesians 6:1, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” God calls Believers to honor their parents.

Honoring my parents came easy. The difficulty arose when I didn’t think they were as wise as I was going off to college. It was surprising upon graduating college to see how much they had learned in four years. Smiling I know it was really me that became wiser. Honoring parents that are abusive could be difficult. They can be honored for giving you life that you may share Jesus. I’m daily honoring my parents by writing for His glory.

How do you honor your parents?

Living for Jesus,

  1. My childhood was very troubled with parents who fought with horrible language and verbal and emotional abuse to each other. My two sisters and I were in the middle. I am grateful to have survived with a loving, faithful, christian husband of 52 years.
