1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV 2011
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers through the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
Peter was one of Jesus’ apostles. He began reminding them in verse eight that the enemy pursues all believers. This information is much like Paul gave to many churched. Thessalonians 5:6, “So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.” He told them to resist the enemy, as did James. James 4:7, “Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” As believers, all are part of the same body that suffers at the hand of Satan. Nothing can overcome God’s eternal purposes.
My approach to life has changed over the years. I understand the enemy is alive and at work in the lives of believers. After deciding to step out in faith and begin a new ministry for Him, there is always opposition from the enemy. Self doubt, uncertainty and a myriad of other things begin to inhibit my progress. As I reflect on this passage as well as 1 John 3:8 and 2 Corinthians 4:4, I understand Satan does not want me to succeed. Nothing can overcome God’s eternal purposes.
Where do we need to remain steadfast for Him today?
