Matthew 7:21-23 NIV 2011
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evil doers!’”
Jesus was offering truth about ones eternal destiny. Using the word “Lord” indicates a higher being. Hosea 8:2, “Israel cries out to me, ‘Our God, we acknowledge you!’” The Father is the final arbiter. Mark 3:35, “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” “That day” is the “day of judgment.” Malachi 3:17, “‘On that day when I act,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘they will be my treasured possessions.’” God treasures all those who remain faithfully His.
Like the Pharisees of Jesus day, there are those that look good from the outside but their motive is wrong. Some people say, “We need to do something.” But they never figure out anything to do. Working in your local community, donating goods to food pantries or shelters, and helping in your church are all ways to serve the Lord. We need to be willing to daily say, “Yes.” I’m His treasured possession because I choose to serve Him faithfully.
How do we know we are treasured?
