Summoned by King Herod, the Magi were sent to Bethlehem to find the Messiah. While many thought “wise men” arrived at Jesus’ birth, they actually arrived later. He was no longer a baby, as Matthew wrote, He was a child. They did recognize Him as the One. Isaiah 60:3, “Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness or your dawn.” Even though there were three gifts offered, no reference is made to how many “wise men” arrived. In verse 12 they were warned not to return with King Herod’s report so they “returned to their own country.” Wise men and women still seek Him.
