Psalm 51:10-12 NIV 2011

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me.

One commentator wrote, “The Hebrew word for create is bara; it means to ‘create something out of nothing.’” God did that at creation. Genesis 1:1,”In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Creation involves making something new. David asked God to create a new heart, one that focused on God not himself. Confession cleansed David’s heart. His cleansed heart was made new by the Lord. With a new heart David was able to joyfully worship the Lord unfetter by his sin. His relationship with God was restored. The Lord’s cleansing forgiveness restores a believer’s relationship and heart.

Charles Wesley wrote, “A heart in every thought renewed and full of love divine, perfect and right and pure and good, a copy Lord of thine.” This is the 4thverse of another favorite hymn of mine. Sin robs me of the joy I experience in the presence of the Lord. I do know He awaits my daily confessions, which offers Him the opportunity to create in me a pure new heart. His forgiveness allows me to joyfully worship Him. His cleansing forgiveness restores my relationship and my heart.

How does God restore the joy of salvation?

Jesus regenerates hearts,
