John 13:35, 1 John 4:12 NIV 2011
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Love is what distinguished Jesus’ followers from the rest of the world. 1 John 4:20b, “For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.” When Jesus called the twelve disciples, they were called to love each other in good times and bad. Jesus’ knew no one had seen God. John 1:18, “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.” God’s love becomes complete in believers. God calls Christians to love one another.
The second song I learned in Sunday school was “Jesus Loves Me.” I remember in youth group reading John 13:35 and listening as the leader shared, “these are Jesus’ words saying we need to love one another.” Studying the book of John in BSF I learned the apostle John wrote 1/2/3 John. The puzzle pieces of my life all pointed me to a closer walk with Jesus. Loving Jesus is easy. Sometimes it’s a stretch to love others. God lives in me, which enables me to graciously love others.
