James 4:7-10 NIV 2011

Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.

Writing to instruct and encourage Jewish Christians, James gave ten action items for removing pride filled sinful attitudes. 1) Submit lives completely to the Lord, Ephesians 6:10. 2) Turn from sinful ways toward lives lived for Christ, Ephesians 4:27. 3) Stay near the Lord, Psalm 73:28. 4&5) Wash and purify by going to God in prayer, Psalm 24:4. 6-8) Grieve sin, mourn separation from God and wail in absolute repentance, Luke 5:32. 9) Make visible life changes. Luke 6:25 10) Go to the Lord with a humble contrite heart, 1Peter 5:6. Christ changes lives.

I first studied the book of James in March 1994 during our Mexicali Mission trip with its focus, Back to the Basics. From that time forward I return to it numerous times throughout the year. Each time I find God reveals new passages to ponder. BSF retreat year 1997 Rosemary Jensen used portions to share with us all. Reading this passage several times the ten action items I found today I missed. Remembering them daily, Christ can change my life.

What sinful attitudes need adjusting today?

Lives changed by Jesus,
