James 2:5 NIV 2011
Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?
James wrote his letter to encourage and instruct God’s people. When facing difficulty and temptation they needed to cling to God alone. He reminded them favoritism is not God’s way. James 1:27, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” God wasn’t interested in their comfort but their character. The words in this verse pressed the faithful toward their rich inheritance in God. He chose them as they were. God continually helps those who humbly submit their lives to Him. All who love God will inherit everything He has promised.
James is thought to be the brother of Jesus. I think that is why I have always enjoyed his writing being from a large extended family. He did not understand Jesus’ mission but chose to follow Jesus after His death. Several extended family members had that steadfast faith I eventually realized I needed for my life. Spending time in God’s Word daily was the first step in my faith walk. Speaking to Him in prayer and living my faith straightens my path. Because I love Him, I will inherit all He’s promised.
What has God promised us?
