Joshua 5:13b-14 NIV 2011
Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”
Joshua was chosen by God to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. God’s provision for Israel’s crossing the Jordan preceded their arrival. Scouting the area near Jericho he “saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword…” Whether it was God or not, Joshua acknowledged the man was sent by God. He responded like Abraham in Genesis 17:3, “Abram fell facedown, and God said to him…” The commander spoke as God spoke to Moses, Exodus 3:5, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” Joshua obediently removed his sandals. God equips those who surrender.
Being successful in completing a task one way does not mean that is the only way it can be done. Joshua was chosen because he knew his life was one of absolute surrender to the Lord. Looking back and remembering all the times the Lord has directed my path is my North Star. God’s Word is filled with sinful men and women that still lived their lives surrendered to Him. As His equipped I will be victorious when I daily surrender.
How will we surrender all today?
Equipped and surrendered,
