1 Peter 2:25, 5:2a,4 NIV 2011
For “you were like sheep going astray,” but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them.
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
The apostle Peter wrote these letters to both Gentile and Jewish believers in and around Asia Minor. His letters contain instructions for living holy lives during persecution by remaining faithful to Christ’s teachings. He compared them to sheep that had gone astray, not unlike Isaiah’s words to the Israelites in Isaiah 53:6. God’s faithful are called to be the shepherds of His flock like the Good Shepherd. John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” When Jesus returns, His faithful servants will receive their inheritance. Jesus is our Faithful Shepherd.
The world in which we live is changing daily. Christian persecution is happening here in our country not unlike the early church experienced during Peter’s day. His words are true for us today and we need to continue being Jesus’ shepherds of those we gather into the fold. Called to shepherd my family and those God has brought into my life prayer is a consistent way to faithfully watch over them. A sinner saved by Christ, He remains my Faithful Shepherd every day.
