Isaiah 49:16, John 10:28-30 NIV 2011
“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.”
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all…I and the Father are one.”
Isaiah’s words of comfort are woven throughout the last twenty-seven chapters of Isaiah. He used words much like God’s words to Moses in Exodus 28:9, “Take two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel.” The names were then fastened to the ephod of the high priest, a memorial before the Lord. John penned similar imagery when he quoted Jesus’ declaration of who He was. Jesus, God’s Son, is one with the Father. He gives eternal life to all who believe and follow Him. Holy God engraves believers on His hands holding them eternally.
God’s Word is filled with comfort and consolation for believers. It’s the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. His Word’s the one constant in my life. Isaiah was the book chosen to read to my mom the night after my dad’s stroke. After studying the book in 2010/11, a principle written over 49:16 is one of my favorites. “God will never forsake or forget His faithful.” It is my reminder that I’m engraved on His hand and He’s holding it daily.
How have you seen God holding your hand?
Held by God,
