So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days.
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
After returning form captivity, the Jews under Nehemiah’s direction, rebuilt Jerusalem’s city walls. They looked to Nehemiah for direction. He prayed seeking God and faithfully led them in renewing their faith and walking obediently with God. October 2, 444 BC is the twenty-fifth of Elul. Jerusalem’s walls in ruins for almost a century and a half were rebuilt under Nehemiah’s tutelage. The wall was dedicated in Nehemiah 12:27-47. God’s people faced skepticism from all quarters. Nehemiah 6:9, “They were all trying to frighten us.” But through it all they followed Nehemiah’s example trusting God. The battle always belongs to the Lord.
Looking back on my life, there have been times when I’ve had to face friends skeptical about the choices I was making. Or when someone important in my life has hurt me deeply. Reading about Nehemiah and all he faced with the Israelites upon their return to Jerusalem, anything I face pales in comparison. Nehemiah’s story challenges me to look beyond what is right in front of me, look up to the Lord and trust He is in control. Each battle I face belongs to the Lord.
