Revelation 7:17 NIV 2011
For the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd;
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’
John began chapter seven describing the 144,000 from the tribes of Israel that will be sealed as servants of God. He ended the chapter describing the Shepherd. In the time of ancient kings, they often referred to themselves as “shepherds of their people.” David referred to the Lord as his “shepherd.” Psalm 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” During the tribulation, the Lamb will lead the people. John used Jesus’ quote in John 4:14b, “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” God will take care of even the tears of His own. Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the Great Shepherd.
I recall sitting at the bottom of a hill listening to our professor speak on our Israel tour. He was describing the place where we sat as possibly the place Jacob slept on his way to Paddan Aram. As he was finishing his lecture, a herd of sheep came over the hill with a shepherd leading them. That is a perfect vivid memory and reminder for the past twenty-four years that the Lamb of God is the Great Shepherd who shepherds me daily.
How will we share our Great Shepherd story?
