John 3:19, 8:12 NIV 2011

This is the verdict: Light came into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John’s gospel focused on the signs identifying Jesus and His mission. John 1:4, “in him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” John’s words were accompanied by theological addresses and announcements of Jesus’ deity. After offering the central theme of his gospel in 3:16, John disclosed Jesus as “Light.” John 8:12 is the sixth “I am” statement Jesus made. Jesus called His followers to be His Light. Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world. A town on a hill cannot be hidden.” Jesus is the Light of the world.

I take for granted the ability to walk into a dark room reach for the light switch to turn on the light. When we loose power, the first thing I look for are the flashlights we have stashed around the house. Darkness hides everything but once there is light, nothing is hidden. When I professed my faith in Jesus Christ, His Light was turned on in me. My daily job is to make sure others see His Light because Jesus is the Light of the word.

Where is Jesus guiding us?

Walking His lighted path together,
