1 John 1:8-9 NIV 2011
If we claim we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
The apostle John’s first letter to the faithful in Asia Minor began much like his Gospel. John 1:2, “He was with God in the beginning.” 1 John 1:1, “That which was from the beginning…” He continued with the human problem: sin. He used that word numerous times. Satan sold Eve a lie and man has been sinful since. John 8:44, “You belong to your father, the devil…” Confession is the answer. God listens when believers pray. Psalm 143:1, “Lord, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief.” The Lord forgives and cleanses repentant sinners.
God’s Word tells us we are all sinners. Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” But God’s Word reveals the truth: Jesus saves sinners. He bore our sins on the cross and paid the price for the sins of every one of us that place our faith in Him. That is the Good News. I need to daily go to the Lord in prayer and confess my sins. That choice is not an option. He forgives and cleanses me when I confess my sins.
What unconfessed sin needs cleansing and forgiveness?
Repentant saved sinners,
