Mark 8:34-36 NIV 2011
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
Mark quoted Jesus’ words to the crowd, possibly now in Jerusalem, during the waning days of Jesus’ ministry. Peter had just stated who Jesus was, Mark 8:29, “You are the Messiah.” He challenged those present to cease thinking they were more important than they were. As sinners, each of them was condemned to die, guilty of their sins. At the cross Jesus’ death atoned for sin. Nothing eternal is gained following the ways of the world. Believing Jesus died on the cross for sinners saves all who follow Him.
Reflecting on how I grew up, we had everything that we needed. Sunday we all went to Sunday school and worship service after. There was always an amazing Sunday dinner and leftovers for supper. Extended family picnics were hosted at our home when they were in town as we all bunked where we could find a bed, davenport or floor space. I believed we were so rich and so did many of my relatives. We knew who Jesus was and why He came. We were saved sinners each following Jesus.
Where is our daily focus?
Sinners saved by Jesus Christ,
