Joel 2:13 NIV 2011
Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from ending calamity.
The Lord sent His prophet Joel to advise God’s people of Judah to wake up. Joel told them to look at the destruction of the locusts. Judah’s only hope was repent and return to the Lord. David also knew God wanted Him to repent and return. Psalm 51:17, “My sacrifice, O god, is a broken spirit: a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” Joel, like Moses, knew the Lord was compassionate. Exodus 34:6, “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger abounding in love and faithfulness…’” God mercifully calls His people to repent and return.
I have to admit, I’ve never faced a plague of locusts eating everything in it’s path. But we are facing a period of time unfamiliar to most of us. My grandmother was born in 1893 but didn’t share much about her life. My mother was born in 1921. She shared growing up as one of seven and their move from Oklahoma to Wyoming driving in an old car. Upon reflection I’ve had it pretty easy. When I repent and return to the Lord, I know that together we can handle anything.
How is God graciously guiding us?
