1 Corinthians 1:20-21 NIV 2011
Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
Paul asked the Corinthians a similar question found in Isaiah 19:12, “Where are your wise men now?” Being worldly-wise will not to save anyone. 2 Corinthians 4:4, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” No one of any standing believed Christ, crucified as a criminal, was the Savior. Romans 3:22, “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” Wisdom comes through faith in Christ.
The rest of the story is found in 1 Corinthians 2:16b, “But we have the mind of Christ.” Jesus said in John 16:15b, “for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” The Word of God contains everything we need to remain faithful to the Lord. When we rely on the wisdom found in God’s Word rather than man, we retain our steadfast resolve by boasting in Christ. Our wisdom comes through faith in Christ.
