Mark 14:6-8a NIV 2011
“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could.”
Jesus during His ministry spoke often of the poor. Luke 4:18, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.” Luke 6:20, “Jesus showed great concern as His heart went out to those in need.” His Words were Truth. Prior to Passover, “a woman” honored Him pouring expensive perfume on His head. The disciples questioned why the woman used expensive perfume. His reply echoed Moses words to the Israelites. Deuteronomy 15:11, “There will always be poor people in the land.” All are poor until they choose to follow Jesus.
A sign outside a church stated, “Festival to End Poverty.” Driving by I said to my husband, “That’s a paradox because Jesus said we would always have the poor.” I then found John 12:8, ‘You will always have the poor among you…’” I did some research and the church is doing a food drive, gathering new and used items for those in need. Our church does that weekly collecting clothing and other items. Sharing Christ along with food and clothing may lead those who are poor to Jesus.
What are we sharing with the poor?
Daily sharing Jesus,
