Luke 10:38-40a NIV 2011
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparation that had to be made.
Jesus brought twelve men to Bethany. John 11:1, “Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.” Martha graciously opened her doors. She was a bit peeved with her sister’s lack of assistance with the meal preparations. Sitting at Jesus feet was more important to Mary than anything else. John 12:3, “Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard…she poured it on Jesus feet and wiped his feet with her hair.” Believers must feast on the Bread of Life, Jesus.
My desire is to be more like Mary but when people arrive unexpectedly, I end up as a Martha. Now we never entertained Jesus and His 12 disciples but anyone that came was important in our lives and it was up to me to be a good hostess. Spending time in God’s Word is the closest I come to being a Mary. Jesus appreciated Martha’s meal preparation but understood Mary sitting at His feet. I know Jesus is the Bread of Life and I must feast on him daily.
How will we feast on Jesus today?
